Class Environmental Assessment Process

This study is following the Class Environmental Assessment (EA) for Provincial Transportation Facilities (2000) process for Group ‘A’ projects.

External agency and public consultation is taking place throughout the study, including six Public Information Centres (PICs). The PICs provide the public and interest groups an opportunity to discuss the study with members of the Project Team.

This study initially included three PICs. Three additional PICs have been inserted into the study process to provide further consultation opportunities.

During the Planning Phase, a Study Design Report (SDR) was prepared. The SDR provides an overview of the need and justification for the project, the planning alternatives to the undertaking, and documents the EA process commitments such as public consultation and documentation. The SDR is available in the Reports section of this website. Notices were published in the North Bay Nugget on June 7, 2012 and June 14, 2012, and the Mattawa Recorder on June 10, 2012 and June 17, 2012.

The assessment of alternatives and input from the consultation process will result in the identification of the preferred plan for Highway 17 from 8.0 km east of Highway 630 to the Nipissing District/ Renfrew County boundary. Upon completion of the study, a Transportation Environmental Study Report (TESR) will be prepared. The TESR includes a description of the project and its purpose, the existing natural, social, economic and cultural environmental factors, the analysis / evaluation of alternatives that were considered, the recommended plan, the anticipated environmental effects and proposed mitigation measures, and commitments to further work, consultation, and monitoring associated with the implementation of the project.

Once completed, the TESR will be made available for a 30-day public review period. Notices will be posted on the project website, published in the North Bay Nugget and the Mattawa Recorder, and sent to persons on the project mailing list at that time to explain the review process and to identify the locations where the TESR is available for viewing.
